What It Took For Me to Finally Take A Timeout For Myself

Thanksgiving Newsletter Article ImageIt’s been pretty quiet in my house these last few days and for good reason. For the past 2 weeks, I’ve been entertaining guests. When you live in Hawaii, you get used to it. After my in-laws arrived, I got a phone call from my one of my closest friends and colleagues, Stephanie. She was very excited because she had a couple of days off from work and wanted to come to Hawaii. Without hesitation, I told her yes that she could come! The day after my in-laws left, Stephanie arrived excited and ready to enjoy her 3 days in Hawaii.

Stephanie and I have a very special bond. We were starting out in business about the same time in Jacksonville, NC. Ironically, Veronica (one of my speakers on the Military Spouse Business Summit) had started her business around the same time. Somehow, we just clicked after seeing each other at the same networking events. We started asking each other for advice, support, brainstorming, and became mastermind partners.

For the three of us, this was an awesome opportunity to get together. How did we make it happen? Well, it just so happens that Veronica lives here in Hawaii as well. With Stephanie coming, we managed to move some things around to spend an entire day with her. I can’t tell how you how great it was to relax, talk very little about business, speak aloud our goals, and just have some girl time. Having this quality time on the beach didn’t hurt either. 🙂

Our time together showed me how important it is to take time away from the office and take a break. I love what I do, so I find it hard to break away from my laptop or my computer. Being with Stephanie and Veronica on the beach, showed me that I need to take a timeout for myself every once in a while. And you know what? Just having that one day was a like a reset. I feel more creative, energized, and have a new zeal in my work and business. When Stephanie left, I made a vow to myself: I would definitely take more time for me and to make it more consistent, I’ll schedule the time on my calendar. My goal is to use 15 days every quarter where I take the timeout to relax or do something for myself.

I still can’t believe that it took one of my closest friends coming to Hawaii for me to take a timeout for myself and reset. What process do you have for taking time out for yourself? Comment below and let me know how you take time out for yourself. I’m curious!
